The most visible and recognizable ensemble in the Southmoore Instrumental Arts Program is the Marching Band. This ensemble is unique and special as it combines all facets of the program. Woodwinds, Brass, Concert Percussion, Marching Percussion, and the Colorguard are all part of the Southmoore Marching Band.
The Southmoore Marching Band seeks to expose our students to an all-encompassing curriculum. The ensemble serves both as an entertainment group for school and community events while at at the same time exploring all trends in the modern marching activity. Furthermore, the marching band serves as a “family” for our students helping them to serve our school and community while at the same time providing students a safe “home” within the walls of our large new school.
Students are provided many performance opportunities throughout marching season. The marching band performs at Southmoore Varsity football games. Additionally, the band competes in an average of six marching contests per season both in state events and national competitions.
The marching band maintains an active rehearsal schedule. Rehearsals begin in May when incoming freshmen are brought on campus for team-building activities and an introduction to the Southmoore Program. Additionally, rehearsals take place periodically throughout the summer and occur more frequently approximately two weeks before the first day of school. During the school year regular rehearsals begin each morning at 7 AM and students attend weekly sectional rehearsals. Marching season concludes in early November and at the same time 7 AM rehearsals also end. Schedules are posted months in advance to help families plan for their students to attend all of these exciting, educational, and worthwhile activities.
